To the Max

I love people watching in general and remember being a student at the Sorbonne in Paris and working in London and Tokyo and happily spending hours sitting watching the  world & the outfits go by.

Inspiration for me comes from many sources – film, nature, travel, literature, music & art but I definitely get a lot from the street.

Now as a busy working mama, living in the burbs I don’t get that same visual inspiration  and so I love Pinterest and blogs, looking at streetstyle, especially from Fashion Week.

I love the mix of fashion powerbrokers, editors, trend forecasters, bloggers and buyers and what they are putting together.

A couple of seasons ago these ladies (including Yasmin Sewell & Tiffany Hsu)  stood out and the floor skimming maxi intrigued me.

I thought I would keep an eye out for a floor length taffeta maxi and maybe try it out.

Black on Black

Although well-known as a lover of bold print, bright colour and sparkle I have been enjoying the dark side since dying my hair squid ink /licorice black and felt especially inspired by Chanel and Balenciaga contrasting textures in their 2015 runway shows.

I was thinking what could I wear to the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, an incredible event, the Oscars of the East that with my film hat on have had a strong connection to for the last 8 years and wrote the script for the SBS live show in 2012.

Work has been so flatchat for the last 3 mths that when I had a couple of hours free I opted to go to the Undressed exhibition at Queensland Museum with my friend Karen than go shopping. But as I casually walked into clothing exchange Swop in West End with 40 mins left to kill on the meter I instantly found 4 pieces I adored of which one was a silk taffeta maxi.

I love Swop’s philosophy which connects with my belief in opshop, thrift, vintage & sustainable fashion, not to mention I love pieces with a story and creating my own unique spin on a look. Plus they are awesome curators and buyers so I always find something I love.

The hero piece was the 100% silk black taffeta maxi. So in love.

Here is what I put together and some pics from the stormy, rained out, soggy black carpet.

What I wore:

  • Black silk Taffeta maxi skirt – Swop vintage
  • Black textured disc tank – Swop vintage
  • Mirrored metallic heels – Wittner (last year)
  • Pearl Choker – Pixie Market buy similar here
  • Bracelet – Paddington Antique Centre (gift from children for Mother’s Day)
  • My Great Grandmother Ella’s art deco monogrammed bag.
  • Metallic nails (which I put on in the car ! read about more nails here) – Kmart
  • Rings – Great grandfather James’ pinky ring and bespoke made platinum & white gold sapphire wedding & engagement bands.

Beauty notes: I am a lo-fi girl and have two small children so reality is 10 mins max for makeup. Since I quit sugar 6 mths ago I have not worn foundation, concealer, bronzer or BB cream during the day at all. Yay !

Last night I did put a touch of BB Garnier around under eyes and nose and chin, eyeliner Body Shop Olive, dash of Stila blush creme & Benefit Moonglow on cheeks and eyes. Body Shop clear mascara, Mac Dynamo lip pencil as base then Mac All Fired up mixed with Revlon Colourburst matte balm in Unapologetic 210.

Perfume (running low – hint hint Santa ..) Clarins Eau Dynamisante mixed with Diptyque Tam Dao.

Hair – I always opt for a style that needs very little done to make a big impact. Thanks to the incredible @EllieatNutSalon who brings my vision to life – the 70s shag meets 60s bowlcut is shaping up well xx

The unglamourous reality of getting ready for a 530pm start as a working Mama with 2 small hungry children results in my notes to self “dog food” often appearing in my photos.

Here we are on the drenched black carpet with my lovely friend Danielle in Scanlon Theodore dress and Melissa shoes. Her necklace was gift from husband from work trip. Nice choice !

Want to STEELEMyStyle?

Silk taffeta maxis from Martin Grant, Temperley etc are easy to find if you have $1k + to spend. No?

Never fear I found this one on Etsy at KrisVintage $70.

Keep an eye out in Opshops, Thrift stores, garage sales and eventually chainstores and give it a go for your next function .. maybe even New Year’s Eve.
