Last week I was invited to the announcement about the new QPAC International Series and the exciting news that Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White will be coming to Brisbane’s QPAC in September.
As soon as I walked into the event I was transported to that wintry mystical forest where Snow White is set. Every detail had been thought of and the lighting, light mist, staging and the soft flurry of snow falling created a stunning effect for the announcement.
A real model Snow White lay in a glass “coffin” – while staff handed out Heston Blumenthal-esque desserts that melted in a puff of smoke or were intricately made “poison” mini toffee apples …
Utterly stunning !
From the talk between impresario Leo Schofield and Angelin Prejlocaj it sounds like the audience is in for entrancing choreography, stunning costumes and an unforgettable experience.
‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of all?’
This lush, full-length story ballet by French choreographer, Angelin Preljocaj, features massive sets, the magnificent excess of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Johannes Fritzsch, and an all-star roster of French artists including set design by Thierry Leproust, and costumes by legendary Haute Couture designer Jean Paul Gaultier.
Preljocaj conjures imagery from the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale of 1812 – set around the innocence of a character with ‘skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony’ pitted against the envy, deceit and obsession of her stepmother Queen.
Naturally the dress code was ebony…
