As a Personal Stylist & Shopper I style hundreds of real women’s bodies a year.

Every body is unique and everybody I work with has their “Aha” or “hell yeah”  moment of realising that it wasn’t their body that was the problem it was the clothes they were putting on it all along.

I don’t like to say I empower women because the proud feminist in me has never heard of men needing to be empowered. Women have power already, it’s just that media messages, negative self talk and self esteem issues diminish our self belief.

When women I work with see themselves in clothes that fit, flatter and express their individuality, they see their potential right there and suddenly their mind opens up to possibility beyond just clothes.

It is one of the most rewarding moments of my job, when I see those women regain their power and see their true selves.

So it is not a case of “I am not the right shape for that skirt ” which is such negative self talk and chips away at your self esteem. You need to change your mindset to say “that skirt does not fit my proportions. Another will.”

I get lots of Facebook messages  about finding pants and jeans and clothes in general  for those who are shorter ladies with a smaller waist and heavier bottom and I work with lots of clients with those proportions so I thought I would share 15 pieces that are instore now that are worth investing in and that are working on recent clients.

I help clients curate their individual wardrobe made up of their key staples that each season they can add some fun on trend pieces to. Want to work with me ? Get in touch

1. THE SLOUCHY TRENCH

This is a perfect transeasonal layer – work it over the lightest tee and then over knits as the weather cools down further. A great piece for overseas Northern Hemisphere summer travel too.

This is a good length on small, petite or curvy on the bottom half – if you are tall – aim for a longer trench. If your waist is less defined opt for a more structured tailored trench or just knot it at the back and wear open which is how I would wear it anyway.

  • Great for Maternity and post baby feeding too :)

2. THE INVESTMENT JACKET /BLAZER

Fit is king or Queen I should say and finding a sleek jacket that fits and you can chuck over a simple Tshirt and jeans combo and look polished is a definite must in any wardrobe.

This shape works so well for many of my clients because of its tailored shape – stretch material in the arms which means no reason to size up just because your upper arms are a bit untoned and flabby and it stops just at the hip bone so it is really flattering.

The moto shape gives it a less tailored / work feel but one of my clients felt she could totally wear it to work as well.

This also gives more structure and definition to the shoulders which if you are bigger on your bottom half and smaller on the top or have less defined shoulders it’s a great way to even things out.

Comes in grey too – also check out Marcs for similar shapes. H & M have a grey biker one that is under $100 but the fit will not be as on point.

I have put clients in their late 60s in this type of jacket and their 30s – it is less about age and more about flattering fit and how you style it.

3. THE SLEEVELESS LONGLINE CARDI

A great option for Queensland or transeasonal wear – when it cools down add knits underneath to give you more warmth factor. Because it is not cheap and clingy material it skims over heavier lower half and it is not too long or too flowy to drown smaller statured women.

Looks great thrown over Tshirt/ Breton stripe and jeans with ankle boots or just over a dress belted with tights and boots.

Can be styled for work or weekend – so versatile and a great price.

 4. THE PUFFA VEST

These are handy to chuck on and give yourself a bit more warmth over a hoodie heading to yoga in the morning or like one of my clients for playground duty !

Instead of going for plain black I opted to highlight this metallic bronze duck down filled one from Uniqlo – because it is a nice colour to work in with neutral classic wardrobe. But they come in all colours – if you need more coverage check out there long sleeve versions.

It is a good fit and with clients that are heavier on the bottom half we always look for pieces that are tailored and stop before their hips for the most flattering and lengthening silhouette.

5. THE CHAMBRAY JACKET

Great alternative to a denim jacket – lighter – less boxy and more versatile – can be worn when “denim” might  be too casual Now layer over summer dresses or just chuck over a stripe tee and add denims, sneakers and scarf – great everyday instant style. When it gets cold layer over funnel neck knit as a cool alternative to a cardigan.

This could easily become a favourite throwover piece in a casual wardrobe, whatever your age.

 6. THE CASHMERE KNIT

Who doesn’t love a bit of cashmere ? And at the Uniqlo prices it is not something you have to wait for an Anniversary to buy. Opt for the V neck if you are bustier and wear on its own or with a tailored shirt or Tshirt underneath. If you are small busted try out the crew neck version and layer a necklace over. You can wear it over a shirt dress or just with jeans and it works as a great Pop with lots of neutrals and khaki etc.

7. THE BRETON CLASSIC

Every chic wardrobe needs a basic Breton stripe – this one is good Autumn/Winter thickness and is not too oversized.

If you are curvy on the bottom this is a great tailored piece that is not too long. Pair it with all the separates here and tell me how versatile it is in your wardrobe.

French chic effortlessly.

8. THE BLACK A LINE SKIRT

This looks nothing in the picture but after seeing a shorter curvier client  look unreal in this – I will be buying one too – so great – a nice spin on the blue denim skirt (also a great staple for any wardrobe) and easy to wear to work if it is not corporate – looks good with long high boots and  bomber jacket for that 70s Cagney & Lacey vibe – great length too hitting just below the knee on her and she is 5 ft 5

Style it with a lace peasant blouse tucked in & a suede or leather trench for luxe factor or a coloured cashmere knit & the long cardigan belted over it.

Pair with clogs – ankle boots or just some ballet flats depending on your own personal style.

9. THE TAILORED TANK

Sometimes you just want a wee tank or vest that is a wee bit fancy not too blingy but something that can look good under a jacket to throw on for dinner or work function. Smaller petite women I style often have a hard time finding tops that are not too long, too big, too low. This is neither and is a nice tone of metallic bronze. Check it out.

 11.  THE CHINO

If you have a much smaller waist than your bottom half it can be so challenging to find pants and jeans.

Often  clients blame their body – it’s not you – your body is just fine – it’s the pants !

You just need to keep looking and that was part of the one client’s mission and we found these chinos in the first 30 mins.

Strong waistband to keep their size round the waist but stretch in the bottom and leg. Great for work or looking smart on the weekend. Come in navy, kahki, beige and black – we bought several pairs. Be aware this model is probably around 5ft 9 – my client was 5ft 5 and they came perfectly to the ankle.

12. THE HIGH WAISTED JEAN FOR CURVES

Jeans are hard to find – no doubt. Usually it would be a separate outing for jeans but I pulled a client in last week to try these on as they seem to always work well for clients who have small waist are curvy and need some sleek dark indigo coverage – and bingo !

And they are on sale !

13. THE STATEMENT WHITE SNEAKER

These are an easy casual shoe to add into your wardrobe and add a bit of fun – love the brogue detail – gives you that loafer look and a street edge all at the same time.

My stylish Mama is in her mid 70s and athritis and back issues have meant she has to opt for lower heels – she has embraced the loafer and brogue with a vengeance.

14. THE TASSELLED LOAFER

There are lots of fun printed/metallic loafers out there but one client I was with was looking for a colour that still was more conservative with a classic feel to it.

The candy pink of these is youthful and fun but they are still preppy enough to be classic – comfy for easy wear or a bit of a colour statement for work and beyond.

15. THE BLACK ANKLE BOOT

Not all ankle boots are created equal.

These are great because the heel is not too high so realistic enough for everyday wear – but high enough to give a petite lady a lift. Cut low and narrow so they elongate those with shorter or heavier legs and don’t chop off legs at the ankle – sleek and nothing tricky so will look as good with jeans as with dresses and opaque tights.

Soft beautiful leather that will only get better with age.
