When I wore this gifted Lace top with my leather bomber on IG I got a lot of comments and email requests from people to give some guidance on wearing lace and leather without looking tacky.
Ultimately if you choose the right type of lace piece and right fit then you are never really going to put a foot wrong – but see my tips below.
But when I was thinking about this week’s 5 Easy Pieces – pieces that can seamlessly move into your wardrobe and be loved for many years to come I thought I might do an outfit with this lace top. ( It also comes in black see below) I wear them with jeans, dungarees, leather midi skirts other pencil skirts and with my camo jacket. Check out last week’s post on cocktail.
This week is a mixture of investment pieces (always think Price Per Wear) and fantastic bargains.
Well suede is a type of leather … this could easily have included a black biker jacket but I wanted to highlight something different. A grey suede jacket is a softer cooler alternative to a black leather biker jacket for those that feel they love the biker shape and vibe want to branch out and get a luxe jacket but are not a black leather type of gal. Warehouse is a good solid UK brand – in fact my first part time job was here aged 16. It has great price for quality ratio and is now online in AU so shipping is a breeze. Check them and their sister company Oasis out if you haven’t done already – big favourites of mine and for sourcing interesting affordable pieces for Personal Styling clients.
Style Tip: Looks great with pastels and metallics – maybe bring in some cool rose gold hoops or earrings. Easy to chuck over a striped knit dress or jeans – play around over floral maxis and softer summer dresses to amp it up a bit.
This one is from Shabby Sisters – an Australian online retailer who gifted me the Olivia in Black and Cream – I have never been a cream type of girl but it has not been off me .. seriously I had to put it away for a wee while as it was getting ridiculous. Every time I wear it someone asks me where I got it.
Lace & Leather Style Tips:
- Make sure with lace that it is not cheap and nasty fabric.
- If you are busty avoid lace & cleavage….
- Keep it cool and sophisticated by not showing too much skin. No short leather and lace…unless you are in your 20s and even then it is hard to pull off.
- Don’t buy either too tight. Nothing worse than sausage skin leather with busting out of lace.
- Look for sleek shapes – midi, leather pants – bombers and leather jackets without lots of zips, pockets, rushing, studs … it will all look too fussy and overdone otherwise.
- If it is cream lace layer a nude slip underneath – white will show through and ruin the look.
- Personally I would rather opt for vintage leather & suede than PU – there is no real comparison – cheap pleather just makes the whole look … well louche not luxe.
I love a black jean and this would really look equally good with the skinny ankle grazers in your wardrobe already, but if not why not play around and look for a crop flare like these great Rag & Bone ones.
Style Tip: Can’t afford to spend this much or want to be more sustainable – do what I do and reuse what I have – DIY crop it and even DIY fringe – or I go and check out Opshops for a 90s boot cut and cut it myself.. Bingo !
Rag & Bone
Senso – is a directional Australian family owned designer shoe brand that began in the 80s and has quietly become the coolest brand on the block – these boots (also come in black) are bang on trend with the cool block cube heel and are also on sale at David Jones.. whoohoo. A great fun update to your ankle boot collection. B A R G A I N !
Style Tip: play around with black opaque tights for that mod look and try out with midi skirts and knitted dresses.

I love a statement pair of sunglasses and they are an accessory that it is always worth splurging a bit on- as you get so much wear out of them in Australia. I have a “Pot of Sunshine” in my house with chic as chips sunglasses that don’t matter if they get lost or broken – (such is life with kids..) but I have a handful of beautifully crafter designer ones that I adore and I tend to ask for a pair for a birthday or Christmas … Prism is a brand I have loved from afar since they began in 2009 – functional yet utterly luxurious these cats eye Calvi’s have a cool two tone and that ever flattering cats eye shape.. versatile and sleek to take your everyday street style to another level. In terms of lip colour I would go a bright pop of pip like a Nars Schiap for fun
Nails .. how about some cool metallic nails or a contrasting colour to the lips – safe and chic is palest of grey.
have a great time !
