5 Easy Pieces : How to Wear Gingham

Written by Sally

When I get dressed it is all about high impact – low maintenance – with 2 wee kids and several businesses to run I do not have the inclination to plan my outfits on a Sunday night. Quite frankly, I would rather be eeking out what’s left of the weekend with the family – having a leisurely chat round the fire or just playing lego before dinner.

Also in my over-scheduled life as a working mum I love letting my mood and inspiration take me somewhere unexpected every morning and just having that freedom to play a bit.  But unlike my pre-kids days when I could try out several outfits before I headed off to work or even spend an afternoon trying out different outfits haha- now it is 15 mins tops.

But I still find something I love and want to experiment with because my wardrobe has been curated to have versatility and statement pieces within the staple uniforms I need for work – mum life etc. What I help others do is the same – find the well loved pieces you need to have some oomph and personality that can be popped on in a sleep-deprived state and create a little moment for you whatever your budget, lifestyle and shape.

Which is why I began 5 Easy Pieces – 5 pieces that I have seen in stores that together create an instant stylish outfit but separately can be styled numerous ways to make an infinite number of outfits.

Gingham is a delightfully ladylike classic and it is timeless but you will see it popping up in high street stores more and more in updated shapes and fashion forward styles. I love a bit of gingham and will definitely be rocking it this spring and summer. So fresh and girly so of course I want to rough it up a bit…

But here are 5 Easy Pieces on How to wear gingham now with a bit of an edge.

So many gingham dresses around but I am loving the length shape and off shoulder sexiness of this one by UK stalwart also now in AU – online. Could easily work for a wedding, races, Big 0 birthday, etc depending on how you style.

STYLE TIP Add a leather jacket and some killer heels for easy date night glamour or add some metallic pastels for another sorbet-tactic vibe. I also love pairing it with mannish flats/ brogues like the picture for a different vibe.

It’s no secret I love a khaki army jacket – I wear them a lot and pair them with girly dresses to add a bit of rough and edge. I also am a kid at heart and love badges, pins and all things customised. These badges give a wee playfulness to the outfit.

STYLE TIP – Belt it over the dress for a peplum flavour

Sizes 4-16

Make sure to check out Petite & Tall versions too

Not your Nana’s shoes – I love a slingback – and found some italian vintage ones a few years ago that I have been wearing a bit – see here with my DIY fringed jeans. Now the trend has filtered from runway into the high street and these Chanel-esque suede slingback are selling like hot cronuts – there are different versions – gold, pink etc – but be quick there were sizes this morning but not sure how long that will last.

So so happy that Marks & Spencer are now in Australia – albeit online – I have been converting Aussie clients to buy from them online for years now. Whoohoo – loved their collage with Alexa Chung but was too slow off the mark – this embroidered shopper is super cute and so on trend – love the raffia and the tassels but very practical for a wee picnic.

Sportsgirl have done some great statement geometric earrings – I own a pair from last season that have seen a lot of wear – solo a la Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation / Five Star and together. This is another great one to add boho without the froufrou – sharp sleek boho vibe.
