I love a bit of layering and as last month’s theme on #SpotMyStyle #realstreetstyle theme was all about Colour & Layering  I asked one of my lovely friends, Sarah from @mummaaintmumsy – (who is a bloody layering legend) if she would give STEELEMyStyle readers a few wee tips on The Art of Layering and she said sure thing.

Layering is a fab way to really up the ante on the personal styling front !

It adds personality, an element of interest through mixing textures and patterns and most certainly adds a little “oomph” to bland wardrobe pieces.

I regularly love to layer to get the most out of key wardrobe pieces.

Here are 4 Ways to get you started.

LONG SHIRTS

One of my favourite layer techniques is the long shirt under a knit and then accessories and jacket over the top. My secret for doing this to avoid bulk is to layer a sleeveless shirt under the knit simply for the collar and the tail out of the bottom. This means the sleeve of the knit aren’t too uncomfortable. This look is super chic over skinny Capri Pants or jeans, making the jeans appear leaner and longer when paired with a little heel.

DRESSES

Another favourite technique is the good ol’ dress over pants, teamed with a denim jacket or blazer. I’ve been sporting this look for years and it was actually what I was wearing when I met my husband for the first time many years ago. This layering concept gives some versatility and usability to Spring & Summer dresses, helps to cover the derrière and allows for a feminine, yet edgey vibe. Pair floral dresses with white or distressed denim, spotty and stripes dresses with black cigarette or flared pants and a bold block colour dress with some pattern or more of the same block colour allowing for a suit style concept.

LONGLINE VESTS

This season the longline vest continues to grace the shopping racks and is an awesome item to add into the wardrobe for some layering play. Layer over tees, button up shirts, tunics, jumpers, skirts, jeans or pants – it’s wardrobe versatility is a real winner. These vests look gorgeous layered with various textures within the same colour palette; yet also are perfect with an all black background underneath. For example black ripped jeans, over the knee boots, long black tee and a cropped knitted jumper underneath with the longline vest over the top as the outfit hero.

ACCESSORIES

Accessory layering is definitely one of my regular go-tos to breathe life into existing wardrobe pieces. Stacking bangles of similar tones or even clashing tones adds interest to simple Summer looks, whilst layering scarves or necklaces over chunky knits in Winter adds an extra bit of pop to take an outfit from blah to Wow! It’s these little finishing off touches that really bring the spark to personal style whether it be for work or play.

The art (well actually joy) of layering is simply that you can have a play and experiment with different layers, proportions, textures and colours to create outfits with personality and punch (whilst also skimming over any parts of the body you wish to disguise)!

Have a play in the wardrobe today – no rules, just jump right in! X
