One of my mantras for Personal Styling clients is
Curate Don’t Consume
I work closely with my Personal Styling & Shopping clients to help them curate a wardrobe that expresses their individuality as well as fit and flatter their body, their lifestyle and their budget.
When working with Personal Styling Clients often they express how keen they are to minimise impulse shopping and have a wardrobe full of pieces they love that is versatile and effortless.
Among the many things I teach them is how to be a Savvy Shopper and curate a wardrobe rather than consume. Not only does this help them have a wardrobe full of well loved flexible pieces but it is a more sustainable way to shop and is helping the environment and move away from fast fashion and consumerism.
This is one of the practices I teach my clients to do when they see a piece instore they have been attracted to.
3 is the Magic Number
- Can you name 3 other things in your wardrobe you like that you can pair this with ?
It is important that it is pieces you like – if you have a wardrobe full of pieces you don’t love then you should not be buying more to try and make them work but getting a Personal Stylist to come and do a Wardrobe and Style Review at home because maybe your wardrobe does not match who you are now. Maybe your wardrobe has never matched who you are inside – if this is the case get in touch now.
- Can you style it 3 different ways ?
In terms of a one piece this is often the question as opposed to the one above – dresses, jumpsuits etc – This can be as simple as wearing different accessories and being able to dress it up or down. Belting it .. layering a piece under it etc.
- Can you see yourself wearing it for 3 different functions (work – event- occasion – weekend – holiday wear – ) ? Another way to help make the decision of whether it comes home with you and sometimes an easier way for people to visualise.
- Can you wear it in 3 different seasons ( if you add jacket, tights, turtleneck or boots, thongs etc ) ?
A great way to help make decisions about investment pieces or pieces that are pricier – if you can wear it only in summer – then you need to think of Price-Per-Wear and perhaps think about 3 ways you can style it. Can you winterise it and similarly can you make that piece work in warmer climates.
If the answer to one of the above questions is yes and the piece fits and flatters you then go ahead.
If not – you need to think hard about whether it is the right piece for your wardrobe right now.
So this month in #SpotMyStyle – #realstreetstyle if you want a theme or challenge to then 3 is the Magic Number.
How to join in the theme/challenge ?
Easy Peasy – choose 10 key pieces and work out 30 outfits.
Bit Tricky – choose 5 key pieces and 5 pieces you don’t wear enough and try and find 30 outfits.
Super Stylist – choose 10 pieces you love but don’t wear enough and see what you can do and create 30 outfits.
What if I don’t like themes – can I still be part of #SpotMyStyle #realstreetstyle
Of course – here are some of my Personal Style mantras that illustrate how I view style as freedom.
