Internationally renowned Australian fashion illustrator Megan Hess has worked with some of the most prestigious fashion designers and luxury brands around the world, such as: Prada, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, Yves Saint Laurent, Vogue, Fendi, Ladurée, Givenchy and Wedgewood to name a few.
Her original pieces of art have varied in scale from the size of a postage stamp to the expanse of an entire building. Her work has appeared on the bottom of luxury swimming pools in Dubai and on the walls of some of the most coveted fashion houses around the world.
With 3 best selling books already under her belt, Fashion House, The Dress and Coco Chanel: The Illustrated World Of A Fashion Icon, Megan has turned her attention to one of the fashion capitals of the world, that holds a very special place in her heart.
STEELEMyStyle caught up with Australian fashion illustrator Megan Hess whilst on her book tour to ask her a few questions about her new book New York: Through A Fashion Eye.
Megan Hess: It was literally that very first moment when we arrived at the airport and got in a taxi. Even just getting in a New York taxi for the first time is an experience in itself. Weaving through the streets, over the bridge and then it goes underground and suddenly it comes up in the middle of midtown and just like WOW, just seeing the buildings, the skyscrapers, the amount of people, the taxis everywhere , New Yorkers on the sidewalk – everything! I think it just blew my mind that first time and I think it’s a funny thing to say as I have been back so many times since, but I still get butterflies in my stomach every time that taxi arrives.
Megan Hess: I love the diversity of it from Downtown, which is very cool with skinny leather jeans, hoodies and very, very cool, casual fashion, to Midtown you’ve got more of a business look and then Uptown you’ve got those true “ladies who lunch” with the pearls and cashmere, Chanel suits. I think New York is one of those places where you can get a complete spectrum of style and for someone who loves to draw and sketch people it’s one of the best places to people watch.
STEELEMyStyle: What has been that moment where you wanted to pinch yourself and perhaps thought of your teenage self and all she imagined possible on that first trip ?
Megan Hess: There’s been a lot of amazing things that have happened, probably the biggest thing was my big break – when the Candice Bushnell Sex & The City book cover came out (Megan did the front cover illustration) and I remember walking out of my hotel room in midtown and down to Times Square and seeing my illustration on one of the billboards there. I just stood there by myself in silence, even though it was probably very loud with traffic and cars and people all around me. I just remember thinking I will never forget this moment. This is definitely a “pinch myself”moment.
STEELEMyStyle: What was your favourite part of the creative process making this book ?
It completes the full circle of the creative process.
STEELEMyStyle: Which Australian designers either up and coming or making waves internationally excite you ?
Megan Hess: We have a lot of great designers doing amazing things – Ellery is doing some incredible designs. But Zimmerman is probably the biggest one in relation to New York. I was so proud when I saw their incredible boutique in downtown New York. Having your own boutique in NY is no mean feat and the fact that they have done it, are showing at NY Fashion week is incredible. I love wearing their styles which kind of translate from that original Sydney Bondi look they created to the streets of NY so I think Zimmerman are the biggest standout.
What I love about this book is that it’s not just an incredibly elegant book of illustrations, Megan provides the ultimate fashion insider’s travel guide to the hotels, museums, restaurants, bars, events ands stores of one of the most iconic cities in the world.
Let Megan take you on this personal fashion adventure, along the way telling you which off the beaten track places she finds her inspiration, gets her favourite coffee, buys her flowers, finds the perfect gift and has a rooftop drink as the sun goes down.
Whether the book like me ignites old memories of past New York trips or inspires future travel plans it is a gorgeous keepsake and perfect present for the fashion and art lover in your life.
