How to Wear Gingham – 4 Pieces to Check Out

Written by Sally

Prints are a great thing to add to your wardrobe and there are timeless prints that never ever go out of fashion.

Stripes we all know and love – a neutral print that you can treat as a basic and pair with everything

Polka dots ..their whimsical chic French cousin are a winner too,but their country cousin is the one to check out …

Banish any notion of picnic table covers and Dolly Parton costumes !

I said it last year and I will reiterate.

Gingham is THE print to add to your wardrobe.

The only choices you now need to make is depending on your personal style, current wardrobe, lifestyle and body shape are..

  • colour of gingham
  • size of check
  • type of piece – top, skirt, dress
  • style of piece – trend driven or classic shape

If you like clean shapes and easy to wear timeless pieces – go for classic shapes – Shirt Dress, 50s fit and flare, shift pencil dress.

Or if feeling more daring go for a fashion forward ruffled, off the shoulder or asymmetrical piece.

This humble little shirt dress below is one I featured a while back from Kmart (now $12 I believe) – from the Teen section – I am wearing an Age 14.

Here is me rocking it in a few different ways – check out #SpotMyStyle #realstreetstyle members @trysomecolour and @bels_style_file on IG too to see how they wore it after seeing it on me.

This was yesterday – firstly I wore it as a tunic over black crop flares, belted with a Vintage thrifted bead belt and some patent sandals and when it heated up to 36degrees  I took of the trousers and kept it on as a dress poolside.

When the weather was a bit cooler I wore it with a bomber like this

Here are a few other gingham dresses out there

I found this cool ruffle vintage gingham check skirt in an opshop and wore it here (pictured with the family at David Jones Christmas Parade and with gorgeous friend @SarahMerrettStyling )

You can buy this cool one below comes in red too. Thanks to @myfashionstylefile for the heads-up on this baby.

Off the shoulder is huge and universally flattering but be aware that off the shoulder will date your piece – think carefully about whether you go on trend with ruffles, off the shoulder or classic with a shirt etc that can be worn different ways for many years to come.

Other than Asos – Boohoo, Toyshop, Choies, Storets have gingham tops that are priced well enough to avoid spending too much on a on trend piece.

Blame Miu Miu but I just DIYed these gingham ribbon ballet flats – an easy fun way to get a bit of gingham in your life
