FOLK FREE EMBROIDERED VIBES
Embroidery is huge in 2017 – blame Gucci for making embroidered edgy and cool and the massive resurgence into all things sewn and it is a trend that is just not going away.
But what if your budget is not Gucci ?
And how can you do the embroidered trend if you are not into the balloon sleeve boho vibes of the Ukrainian folk inspired pieces that are everywhere ?
Embroidered pieces will never date if you make sure the cut and shape is not too “trendy” – aka avoid flared bell sleeve pieces & off shoulder if you want your piece to work hard in your wardrobe.
These pieces below will remain firm favourites in your wardrobe for many years and there’s not a Vyshyvanka Vita Kin folk inspired piece in sight.
No matter what your style or age you can rock some embroidered fun.
Folk Free Zone Ahead !
1.THE TAILORED SHIRT
Easy to slip into your current wardrobe – pair with jeans – pencil skirt for work or cutoffs. If your style is quite classic this is an easy way to be a bit more daring under a tailored brass button blazer and loafers.
Love this one from Next under $50 below or check out this one at Sportsgirl
2. THE SWEATER
Layer up in style – check out the array of embroidered sweatshirts and knits out there to give a wardrobe staple a bit of personality.
Oasis – another UK giant that is now in AU online have lots of sweet styles in classic knit shapes.
But I love the balloon sleeves and fashion forward shape of this one from ZARA – Why not pair this one with black ripped denims or leather skirt for an edgier folk vibe.
$49.99 AUD (approx)
You can make a cool statement with a pair of embroidered loafers whether Gucci or not … these cute ones from UK stalwart now in AU are pretty perfect.
4.THE DIY PATCHES
This is a great DIY way to upcycle and be more sustainable – either buy a piece from an opshop or upcycle something you already own.
I did this recently check and will post an IG video soon.
This brand are doing some cool stuff Orelia UK
they have heaps of cool iron on or stitch on embroidery.
I feel like this is how I would approach embroidered jeans – I feel badged and embroidered jeans will go out of fashion again so don’t invest too much – just have a play either with a cheap as chic pair or even better DIY existing pair of jeans.
5. THE DRESS
The reason I have chosen this particular dress is it is one of my favourite shapes – and a way to enjoy the embroidered trend in a print.
I have this in two prints and have lost count how many times I have told clients to buy these “wiggle” dresses. They are a stylish staple – never crush – great for corporate travel – business – occasions – or whatever just change the accessories- so easy and flattering on so many bodies – great sleeve coverage – a wee bit of stretch – length hits the sweet spot of the leg as I call it and most of them have pockets.
If you spend most of your time in an office than at home – this is a timeless & elegant way to enjoy something on trend and meet the practical polished needs of the office.
They have petite, tall and curve versions of these dresses too.
6.THE STATEMENT EARRING
Statement earrings are so on trend and this gorgeous pair is the result of a collaboration between artist Liz Payne and Gorman.
Embroidery but not as you know it. Stunning !
7. THE JACKET
Whether slogan or design there are more embroidered jackets out there in stores at the moment than you can shake a beaded stick at.
This is the best Gucci inspired version I have seen – buy once and buy leather to last. Curate don’t consume.

8.THE DESIGNER BAG
So you might not be able to afford the GUCCI versions (I have started a GUCCI bag jar – selling pieces to be able to save up and buy one for myself) but this is an Olympia-Le-Tan Aristocats embroidered bag that if like me you love the quirkiness of her designs will appeal. And it is half price !!
