I moved to Brisbane nearly 7 years ago from my beloved Sydney where I imagined happily living out my days after emigrating from Scotland in 2001.

We moved solely to be on hand to help my terminally ill father and support my mother through breast cancer.

And in those 6 and a bit years I have been struck by how rocking’ Brisbane’s food and entertainment scene is and although with little kids I do not get to be out and about as much as I would like, I do want to let you know some cool places to check out.

Here are 3 Best Spots Out and About in Brisbane this month

Merlo

bloody everywhere in Brisvegas :)

If you live in Brisbane and don’t know Merlo coffee you have been hiding under a sad caffeine-free rock.

One of the first things I did when I came to Brisbane was find the place I could get good coffee.

Anyone who loves their coffee knows they would rather drink Green Tea than shit coffee.

I only drink one soy latte a day so it bloody better be good.

Very quickly I realised that Merlo was my bean and had my back.

But apart from their amazing beans – they do  fast food I want to eat and their new menu available at Merlo Coffee in George Street, Queen Street, South Bank and UQ is right up my alley.

It’s like a who’s who of my favourite yummy healthy foods for some serious brain power at work … baby spinach, chickpeas, pumpkin, pepitas, avocado, cherry tomatoes, goji berries and baba ganoush.

OM nom nom …

pass me my Headspace meditation app to really start the afternoon Zen as fuck and get shit done.

Buddha Bowl

Can you Keep a Secret

619-621 Stanley St, Woolloongabba QLD 4102

I knew these guys when they were just a banging vintage store and have bought many pieces.

I don’t get to go out to a bar very often. I’m not a big drinker so going out needs to include food and/or dancing usually.

But for my birthday, all my galpals and their husbands met here before my surprise dinner for a cocktail and not only did we get to hang in the cute private room (love the vintage decor!) but we stumbled on their Brazilian Carnival night, so it felt like we had just walking into a cool rambling home bar in Rio de Janeiro .. with added bonus of vintage shopping with a Negroni in hand.

So so fun – cannot wait to go back.

Unassuming, understated cozy cool xx My kind of place.

Detour Restaurant

I often talk about how real style is inclusive – and this restaurant has cracked that – where vegans, vegetarians and carnivores can have a culinary adventure together – which is what I had when my husband booked this place for my surprise birthday dinner.

From the washi paper menu to the efficient friendly waiters of all ages and casual cool atmosphere – this was pretty perfect.

We had 4 vegan folks in our party of 14 but we all chose to go heavy on the vegetables including the Fossiled Carrots, Coal Roasted Broccoli and were regaled…  I could eat their Gunpowder Salmon with black ants every single day.

Make a booking and make some memories. Seriously ..
